...Everybody’s got one and they all stink

Opinions are flowing regarding the Auburn game, so I figured I’d offer what I saw from Section 35 Saturday night.

Opponent

First, I should acknowledge that Auburn’s offense was far better than I figured (maybe hoped would be a better word) they would be. This offense operated a timing scheme with razor thin margins…and they did it well. There was never any question that Auburn’s defense was one of the best in the country. The question was weather or not they could move the ball. Consider that question answered in the affirmative.

I said earlier that if Malzahn could get Auburn’s offense clicking, he was a miracle worker. Well, I’m sold (mostly…more on that later). Chris Todd looked sharp. Kodi Burns was a serious threat in the wildcat. The receivers ran crisp routes and caught the ball. And, of course, the running backs were big and fast. It will be interesting to see what this offense does against better defenses. Malzahn’s genius is that he finds your weakness and exploits it. Once he finds the weakness, he keeps digging at it until you fix the problem…a strategy the Frank Scelfo should look into.

It’s tough to know what to take from Auburn’s apparent resurgence on the offensive side of the ball. Maybe they are vastly improved and maybe we’re not as strong as we had hoped. It’s probably a little of both. We’ll know more as they get into conference play.

The Dawgs

The offense looked surprisingly good in the first half. I know a lot of folks say that our TD drive was a gift from Auburn, and that’s partially true. I would argue, however, that the penalties that extended the drive took place because the Tech offense got the Auburn defense out of position. In other words, they had to grab a facemask because if they didn’t they couldn’t make the stop. The turnovers were inexcusable. Poor decisions and mental lapses gave Auburn the ball at least twice (just off the top of my head).

The receivers looked good in the first half and got the drops in the second half…of course, they had a lot less to work with in the second half. Ross looked kind of like Ross usually looks. He’s not going to set the world on fire, but you can usually count on him not to blow the game either. I don’t think he, personally, blew the game, but the unforced fumble and the interception in the end zone were out of character for Ross. I don’t know if he was trying too hard or what, but he’ll have to eliminate the mental mistakes if his spot on the depth chart is to go unchallenged. First half Ross looked much improved. Second half Ross was a little worse than last year. It’s tough to say which one we can expect to show up the rest of the season.

The running game was predictably shut down. Auburns D is big and fast and they more or less imposed their will the entire game. For whatever reason, we were determined to try and run the ball to the outside. Auburn’s speed made those efforts futile. Ross showed some speed on a few scrambles. Porter showed a little, but had trouble overcoming the speed of the defense. On a few plays, he seemed to miss the hole with the most potential, opting to try and get outside. It didn’t work.

The OL had a lot of trouble with the running game. I’ve read a lot about the poor pass protection, but that’s not what I saw in the first 3 quarters. Ross had enough time when we called the right plays. I don’t know if it was generosity, but the defense was giving us the intermediate pass game. Ross even had time on a few long plays. The OL performed about as well as I expected against a very good Auburn defense.

As usual, the play calling left me scratching my head. We seemed over committed to running the ball with misdirection plays that obviously weren’t working. Even our fastest guy had trouble getting to the outside on Auburn, yet we continued to try and run outside the tackles. Like I said earlier, the intermediate pass game was there ALL day and we only seemed to take advantage on occasion.

The surprise player for me was Houston Tuminello. I know he’s not a burner, but he consistently achieved separation against bigger and faster DBs. I guess his route running is just that good. We could’ve thrown slants to him all night….but we didn’t. Dennis Morris played well, but only got two balls. I wish I had seen us go over the top with Cruz Williams. I saw him beat his man several times. A well placed ball could’ve gone for a big gainer. Our coaches must not have much faith in our ability to execute that play because it was open and there for the taking.

On the defensive side of the ball, we showed a lot of heart and a lack of discipline. We consistently blew containment, took bad angles at the ball carriers, and arm-tackled. More than a few times, we completely blew the coverage and left the Auburn wide-outs all by themselves behind our safeties. With a few quality throws, the score could’ve been much worse.

Ultimately, our inability to stop the run cost us the game. Auburn averaged nearly 6 ypc. They could run inside or outside. The only stops we made were when they, inexplicably, decided to throw on second and long and failed to connect. After a sufficient amount of time failing to stop the run, Malzahn had us right where he wanted us…with eight in the box. Once that happened, they were able to go over the top with ease. Run D was our strength last season. We were absolutely ineffective in that facet of the game on Saturday. While I expected our running game to struggle against Auburn’s great defense, I was not expecting the swiss cheese impersonation by our defense.

A bright spot for the dawgs was on special teams. Glasgow had one poor punt, but the other 5 looked pretty good. A 38 yard average in your first start at an SEC stadium tells me that his future is bright. Matt Nelson took care of business and showed me that our kicking game will be much improved this year.

Overall

I tried to provide some warning when I posted about Boise’s inability to beat BCS teams on the road (until last year). It’s just a tough thing to do. I was expecting a closer game and for three quarters, I got what I expected. Our second half offensive collapse led to a gassed defense that gave up 14 points in the fourth. It should be noted that the starters were playing well into the fourth for Auburn. Chizik needed to assert himself and he did it with 2 fourth quarter TDs against a team he already had beat. That’s the nature of the beast.

I’ll say that I think this loss looked better than our games at Kansas and at Boise last year. Auburn clearly looked a lot better than the MSU team we beat a year ago. We were into the game until about 12 minutes left. That’s great, but it brings to memory games last year when we seemed to blow it in the second half. We still don’t seem to be a team that plays a full four quarters every week. It doesn’t appear to be a conditioning issue. There could be some depth problems, but it appears to have mental facets as well. We came out flat in the second half…I can’t think of a better way to say it. We didn’t have any fire and it showed.

The ramifications for the rest of the season are hard to discern. Like I said, it’s tough to tell how good Auburn really is. They looked great against us, but we looked pretty bad. I really think next week will give us a better indication of where we’re headed this year. If our defense plays as undisciplined as it played against Auburn, we are in for a long day in Annapolis.

I helped plan a little get together at a friend’s house on Saturday. Small group, but it was around the pool and the grill was going so there were no complaints. I was asked to cook (after all, I did come in second in the Mix 97.3 FM "Man of The Grill" contest last Saturday) and that was fine until I was two hours late.

But I had a good reason. See the wife, kid and I went house seeing (were being shown houses) this morning. Saw a house that was nice but too expensive in Stockwell Estates. Saw a house that was nice but a little small in Dogwood South. Saw a house that was a great price but needed A LOT of work in Lakewood. We’ve looked at a lot of houses and there is always some reason why we can’t commit. But that’s not the reason we were late.

We were late because we drove down Airline Drive to go home. That’s right Airline Drive caused me to be two hours late to my own party. I hate Airline Drive. Grew up a block off of it and can’t stand the street. I have been around Airline Drive so long that I remember when Airline Drive had grass medians! It was a boundary street growing up and it is just a pain in the ass now. They should rename it MolassesLINE. Because that is how fast you will travel down it. But it really wasn’t Airline Drive’s fault either.

See, we were heading south on Airline at the light just north of I-220 when I looked over and saw the unusual black smoke. The type of smoke that makes you look twice. The type of smoke that occurs when something is burning that shouldn’t be. I mentioned it to the wife as we waited in line at the light. It seemed to be coming from the retirement home her Memaw left just a few months ago (Merrill Gardens, now New Horizons ..or something similar) And then it happened. A big puff of black smoke as the light turned green. We turned in.

As we come to the retirement home we see the flames. Completely engulfing the utility area just west of the entrance on both floors (I new it wasn’t a resident’s room because I had gone through the doors next to the fire many times moving Memaw’s stuff in and out). It was gut check time. Here I had my wife and 21 month old child in the car outside a burning retirement home filled with people I KNOW can’t help themselves. I ran in.

As far as I know everyone came out safe. The others that saw the same thing I saw and did the same thing I did got everyone out safe. A little shaken up, a little scared, but safe. My wife (she had our child so she didn’t go in) ran across the street to McAlister’s Deli. Within minutes she had the manger and a lot of the employees carrying tea, lemonade, and water jugs over WITH bags of ice and cups to help keep the residences cool. (they got there almost faster than the firemen) haha! (not true but pretty damn quick) (You north Bossier people should spend a little extra money with them for this.)

This event really upset me. Having dealt with my wife’s Memaw for quite a while and watching my own Papa slip from self sustaining at home, to bed ridden at the VA Home (on the Bossier Parkway) in less than a year, really has made me reflect on this.
“That was someone’s grandmother I carried out.”
“That was someone’s grandfather I helped down the stairs.”

“Or was that MY own family?”

We walked back to the car hugging each other. We had done all we could. The professionals were there. They stopped us from going back in a long time ago. Every resident had a McAlister’s cup with ice and a beverage. And everyone seemed safe. It was time to go.

We drove home and got our stuff. Made the phone calls stating how soon we would be where we should have been hours ago. And we promised to explain. I had the guys start the grill, for the “runner up”, and prepare for the food! It wasn’t until we got about two blocks away from my buddies house that my wife looks at me and says… “You realize you ran into a burning building to help old people, right?”

Not really. I hadn’t realized that yet. But yeah, I did! I ran into a burning building to help a bunch of old people. I believe St. Peter should note that NOW on my sheet! It should take care of at least a few bad decisions!

So we get to the party and I get the food out. People are demanding to hear WHY we are so late and are getting quite pissy about it. I will tell them about it all but I need a few minutes. The charcoal is wrong and everything will go to shiat if I don’t fix it. So I pull the grate off and it swings up and catches my forearm just right to leave a three inch burn on my arm. Damn, that fire is hot!

Moral of the story is…..
Even the hero can get burned.

Since when did we need 3D glasses to watch a Super Bowl commercial? I sure didn't get that memo. But in my panic that set in after the Super Bowl had started and I learned that I might miss some great commercial around halftime. My brain started churning. "3D glasses, 3D glasses, when was the last time I used my 3D glasses and where did I put them?" (Maybe not all of you, but at least a few of you have old 3D glasses you saved for just this occasion!) "Ah hah! I bet they are in that box in the attic that holds all my important electronic stuff from my bachelor days." Ya'll know the box. The box with 8 different three foot long coaxial cables, 2 remotes for equipment that stopped working 10 years ago, a set of rabbit ears, and a couple of 1980s movies on VHS that you recorded from HBO... box. "Yeah, that box. I am sure they are in THAT box!" So I asked the wife to watch out for the commercials (You can't pause the Super Bowl because then people will text you about stuff you haven't seen yet) while I climb up into the attic to get to "that box".

When I got into the attic I said to myself for the 100th time, "You really need to put a light up here." So I searched the area with a flashlight noting the little things like the pair of crutches that I was looking for last summer when I hurt my hamstring, or the large box of dirt cheap Christmas wrapping paper and other Christmas stuff that I bought after the 2007 Christmas season for "next year", or the "disturbed" area of insulation where I fell through the ceiling a few years back. Good Times. Then back in the far corner I see it, "That Box". I step carefully from beam to beam slowly working my way through the attic. Thinking how lucky I was I have had only one Captain and splash of Coke, regretting I made it in a Tech cup. I finally make it. But wait, what the hell is in the box? Why is there a hole in the box? And why does it look like..........a squirrel's nest! Damn it! Three years ago those little (actually big ass) rats with fuzzy tails decided the limb on the tree close to the roof was a good way to get to my house. Then apparently the one that played Mr. Jaws from the James Bond movie decided he would chew through shingles to get he and his family inside my house. I did finally get rid of them. It took mothballs and constant light coming out of the work/flood lights, but they are gone. Then I see it! A little piece of red plastic. They ate my 3D glasses!

I make it down from the attic just about mid way through the second quarter at the end of a commercial break. My wife was laughing while using the universal sign for rewind. "You couldn't have told me they were starting? Or at least pause it for me?" "You said we couldn't use the Tivo during the game!" she replied. So I snatched the remote and rewound to the beginning of this set and watched them all. The game started back and I said, "Those sucked! What were you laughing at?" She was laughing at some chic flick movie preview! He doesn't like you, or something like that. What a waste! So now I am fast-forwarding through the Super Bowl to catch back up with "real time". I don't even make it before the next round of commercials start. And what's the first commercial I see? Another commercial telling me to get my 3D glasses out! "I DON'T HAVE ANY!!!" So where can I get 3D glasses? Why don't these damn commercials tell me where to get some 3D glasses? And in this day and age of multi billion dollar satellites beaming live TV around the world, TV recorders that allow you rewind live television, and HD TV's that can cost more than a car and allows you to see the pours in the cracks of John Madden's double chin, why can't they just make TVs that can show 3D without some stupid two cent cardboard glasses?

Screw it! I'll go make myself another drink, fast forward the game, and wait for the "Great, Wonderful, Fantastic" 3D commercials and half time show. Maybe they won't be any good (which apparently they weren't based on the talk today). So I sat there sulking. Watched what I would call one of the most memorable plays In Super Bowl history as time ran out in the half. And text some friends about 3D glasses thinking no one would have theirs either.
Funny thing, they had glasses.?.
"How did ya'll know?"
"Commercials"
"What commercials?"
"They've been showing them all month."
"Really?"
"You use your Tivo too much!"

BLASPHEMY!
Too much Tivo? No such thing! Tivo is the second greatest invention behind only the TV! OK, third, Beer was the first greatest. Those guys are nuts!
So the commercials come on and I am watching them thinking about how much better they would be if I had cardboard 3D glasses. Wondering if my Super Bowl disappointment can really be blamed on skipping commercials for a month with Tivo. Thinking about all the plays I missed today because I fast-forwarded through to catch up to "real time". Is Tivo the greatest invention ever or just the devil trying to ruin my life?

When it hits me! Literally, it hits me. I was watching Springsteen rock the stage when The Boss does his shin slide across the stage and plants his crotch right on the camera lens! WHAT THE HELL? I did NOT need to see that! And then I started laughing. "Whew! I am glad I didn't have 3D glasses for that!"

Well, as I've seen, Joy has given somewhat of an update on my stay here at the Clinic. I got to Jacksonville, FL on Monday the 27th. As Joy pointed out, I didn't get much sleep the weekend because I broke out in a rash and hives that I attributed to some new medication my doctor had given me. Well, I still have the rash (must have gotten too close to one of marketdawg's old ones), and it itches like crazy. No ointment seems to have much affect for very long. Most of the rash has gone away though.

Also, as Joy pointed out, I woke up early Sunday with low fever and throwing up. Also noticed my hands and feet were swollen. After a couple of days the swelling had gone down a little, so that now it's not too bad. I was able, thanks to some drugs, to make it to my sister's in New Orleans who brought me to the airport Monday. I did feel well enough Sunday night to eat some fresh specks my brother-in-law caught earlier that day, thanks to some drugs.

Anyway, felt fine Monday morning. The flights were fine. Mom and Dad met me at the airport and we all came to hotel to check in. My first appt. was with the Internal Medicine doctor who went over some things and some tests I was going to have. They printed me out an "itinerary" of what appointments I had when and where and the nurses even wrote on the itinerary the ones I could go "standby" to try to get in early as some appts. were scheduled for next week or because I had so much time between other appointments I could knock these out as well and try to limit my stay.

As of now I gave the first 21 vials of blood that first day, and today I added another 11. Anybody ever have to give a fecal sample? I think that's something everyone should have to go through. Now I'm having to carry a gallon jug around with me for 24 hrs. for urine. I can't relieve myself anywhere else but in that jug. Looks like a fun night out on the town for me.

Anyway, I've seen an Internal doctor, a rheumatologist, a pulmonologist, a gastroenterologist, a dermatalogist and now Monday, I'm scheduled to see a hemotalogist. All the work of going through standbys didn't do much good as the main doctor postponed my upper gi test because I'm on a blood thinner. So, I managed to get it rescheduled for next Tuesday and they have given me a new schedule on taking the blood thinner. All this was done because the rheumatologist said he needed to have that test to come to some conclusions or else they would have just gone without running it. Plus, as I said, they scheduled me another doctor's visit on Monday. I was really hoping to be home this weekend.

Anyway, back to the rash and hives and swollen hands and feet. The rheumatologist doesn't think they have anything to do with the medicine my doctor prescribed me. He thinks it's just coincidental that it all came on at the same time. The reason he doesn't believe it is related is because it doesn't react like a normal rash or swelling in that it isn't fluid when squeezed. He actually thinks I have 2 separate disorders having to do with the swelling and my lungs and a different disorder having to do with my clotting. I have two more tests scheduled for tomorrow, and I'm sure the hematologist will want something as well.

I was originally scheduled to return here on the 18th of November for the review, but they are going to send the info to my doctor instead, so I doubt I'll know anything of what they find and treatments until then.

The only good thing that could come of me having to stay this weekend is if someone knows Josh Scobee and can get him to leave me a couple of complimentary tickets at the will call booth for my dad and me to see the game. I think they play at home.

Anyway, just wanted to give you all an update and ask for continued prayers as everything is still somewhat in a toss up as to what's going to happen from one day to the next, and I'm tired of being away from my wife and son. I mean, my mom doesn't mind me laying next to her and hugging her for a few minutes, but it gets really uncomfortable when your hand starts to roam and my dad doesn't look too keenly on that either.
